It is important for you to know that Cusco is located at 11,300 feet in elevation, we recommend during this first afternoon to take it easy so you can begin acclimatizing to the altitude. Nevertheless, this is a good chance to walk around the Main Square, with its many cafes and stores. There are also many options for casual and/or fine dining.
  • Overnight in Cusco.
  • Morning at leisure. This would be a very good time to explore a little bit more of Cusco’s less-visited attractions, you have for example: San Pedro Market, the beautiful neighborhood of San Blas, or one of Cusco’s fine museums, such as the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, the Casa Concha (“Machu-Picchu Museum”), or the Choco Museum, where you can make your own chocolate from scratch.
  • In the afternoon, you will have the chance to visit the historical city of Cuzco. Your visit will begin with the center of the city, touring around two beautiful colonial landmarks: The Main Square and The Cathedral to see its fabulous wood carvings and impressive altars and the lovely Church of La Compañia de Jesus (Society of Christ). Then you will visit the ancient Koricancha (Temple of the Sun in Quechua), an ancient Inca worship center to the Sun God and a marvelous mixture of Inca and colonial architecture. Later on you will leave the city and head towards the outskirts where several archaeological sites from Inca times can be found, and what better example of this that the Sacsayhuaman Inca Fortress, entirely built in stone, each piece carefully carved to fit perfectly to the other. This Inca fortress is also the chosen site for the Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) that is celebrated every year on June 24th. Even more archaeological marvels are ahead: Kenko (labyrinth or maze in Quechua), a ceremonial site; Tambomachay, where a never-ending spring can be found, this place is locally known as the Inca Baths, a site that it is believed to be an Inca tribute to Unu (water in Quechua) and you will have a panoramic view of Puca Pucara.
  • In the late afternoon, you will return to your Cusco hotel. Evening at leisure where you can enjoy local cuisine, music, and the splendor of Cusco at night.
  • Overnight in Cusco.

Afterwards, we will get to Ollantaytambo, one of the most monumental architectural complexes of the ancient Inca Empire. Very well known for its “andenes” (terraces dug into the slopes of mountains for agricultural purposes), Ollantaytambo was a highly effective fortress, also served as a temple. Then, we will follow to the town of Ollantaytambo, “the unique living Inca town”: the best surviving example of Inca city planning, with narrow cobblestone streets that have been continuously inhabited since the 13th century.
  • In the late afternoon, you will be taken to your beautiful hotel in the Sacred Valley where you can relax and be ready for your exciting next destination.
  • Overnight at the Sacred Valley.

Upon arrival, our tour representative will meet you at the train station and take you to the bus station for a 20-minute ride up to the citadel. A professional English-speaking guide will take you for a 2-hour tour to the most important sites in Machu Picchu, including the Intihuatana (Sun Stone), the Sun Temple, and the Room of 3 Windows. The place is the top of the remains of an ancient volcano, which was submerged when the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, roughly 40,000 years ago. We will visit also the Cueva Galaxia (Galaxy Cave) and Cueva del Diablo (Devil's Cave). The first is a rock fantasy that takes the visitor to another dimension. The rock formations were created when the salt flats were still a sea and the Tunupa volcano came into contact with the water about 225 million years ago. They resemble strange bones hanging from the ceiling and walls, forming extraordinary figures. Next to this cave is the Cueva del Diablo, which contains a cemetery or chullpar with human remains.
